Koala Sighting
Wherever you travel there will be local issues and information that you might not be aware of as a visitor. The news might not have filtered from the local area to the world you inhabit. We find it enormously satisfying to learn good news stories (especially good news) about the places we visit that we might not otherwise have known.
You may not be aware that Australia's adorable koalas are in serious danger. They are now listed by the Australian Government as an endangered species. So a sighting of one koala let alone three is cause for celebration by the entire community. Here is a heart warming tale of rescue and release. One to gladden us all.
Koalas Matilda and Jones Released at Hilliards Creek, Ormiston, Queensland Australia: Matilda, along with Jones and Rose, was rescued and treated at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.
After recovery, all three were released in April–June 2025 near Hilliards Creek in Ormiston, close to where they were originally found (Ormiston, Wellington Point, and Cleveland areas).
Matilda and Jones were fitted with Bluetooth ear tags for tracking. These tags allow wildlife monitors to locate the koalas using handheld receivers without needing invasive tracking collars.
The release is part of the broader Koala Safe Neighbourhood initiative and rehabilitation efforts coordinated by groups like the Koala Action Group (KAG), the Redland City Council, and researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast.
By the way, when walking through the Australian bush (and probably on nature trails everywhere) look up. The wonders in the trees can make your day.
