Driving/Rentals

Self-drive - both freeing & a challenge

We have driven through many countries and loved being able to get off the beaten path and discover something new and unexpected. At the same time navigating tiny lanes only fit for a donkey can be pretty terrifying.

Driving is a fine choice.  It might be a good idea to check out google maps to see what the journey might hold before making your final decision to  decide to drive.

Car Rentals

We have had a mixed experience renting cars. It has been mostly good but we have had a few scams along the way.

Make sure to take photos of the entire rental car  before leaving the rental premises. That way you have proof if a scratch is found on the car when you return it.

We suspect, as with all things, getting a trusted referral to a reliable rental company is the smart thing to do.  The smaller companies may save you a bit (or a lot)  but they may also be an enormous hassle and expense in the long run.

Tips for renting and driving

  • Planning to rent a car and drive overseas? It’s a fantastic way to explore at your own pace, but it’s important to be prepared.
  • Start by researching the local driving laws of your destination, as road rules vary widely between countries.
  • Ensure your driver's licence is valid in the country you’re visiting; in some cases, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required.
  • When booking a rental car, compare companies for pricing, insurance inclusions, and vehicle types.
  • Always inspect the car for damage before leaving the lot, and take photos as evidence to avoid disputes later.
  • Be sure to understand fuel policies, road tolls, and parking regulations to avoid unexpected fines.
  • Identify a petrol station near the drop off point so if you are in a rush to return the car you know where to fill up with petrol so you don't need to pay the whopping petrol surcharge.
  • It’s wise to consider comprehensive insurance coverage for peace of mind, even if it costs a little extra.
  • We don't get the insurance offered on the internet when we rent the car.  It seems it actually doesn't give the full cover we'd want.  We buy the insurance from the company when we pick up the car.
  • Additionally, familiarise yourself with local road signs, speed limits, and driving etiquette to keep safe while on the road.
  • Lastly, plan your route ahead of time but remain flexible to enjoy the adventure. With these tips in mind, you can have a stress-free and enjoyable driving experience overseas.
