Community Support While Traveling
A friend from Hungary recently told me a wonderful tip. She likes to travel to many less affluent countries than Australia and she always looks for orphanages at her destination when she is planning her trip. She contacts them and asks what they would like as a gift donation. Often they want children's clothing, small books etc. Then she buys stuff from the opshops. She herself travels quite light so her luggage allowance covers these extras. She takes them herself to the orphanages and often spends some time in that community. She says it is a wonderful way to connect, giving the traveller an authentic local experience and the kindness shown back to her usually greatly exceeds the effort she has made. It is an inspirational way to connect with the local communities.
